Natural Constipation Remedies

Those who suffer from chronic constipation are always on the lookout for effective constipation remedies – especially those that are natural and healthful.  Natural constipation remedies include fruits and herbs which are known to help improving bowel movement.  Apples, honey, prunes and plums are good sources of fiber and water, and are natural laxatives.

There are also herbal laxatives like Senna and Cascara Sagrada which contract the muscles on the digestive system, specifically the intestines. It is also important to make sure natural laxatives are psyllium, or fiber-based. Castor oil is common among home constipation remedies. Though these may be considered natural and known to be gentler on the body compared to the ingredients in synthetic constipation medications, moderation in use is still advised and it is still recommended to see a doctor.

Among these remedies for constipation, we also need to eat more grain products daily, eat fruits and vegetables often, cut back on refined foods, bulk up on fiber, know current medications, train to a daily bowel routine, and increase daily fluid intake.

Use of laxative is commonly practiced but it is not recommended because people can become dependent on them and use them for weeks, months, or even years at a time to be able to pass bowel.  Laxatives should not be used for more than a week unless prescribed by a doctor. Prolonged use may cause the bowels to lose the ability to move on their own, which leads to chronic diarrhea and potassium depletion caused by excessive loss of fluid in the body.

Constipation, as defined, is the symptom of infrequent and hard to pass bowel movements. Constipation is commonly caused by;

  • A unhealthy diet with low dietary fiber and fluids
  • Sedentary lifestyle or the lack of physical activity
  • Certain medications
  • Stress
  • Specific diseases and underlying health condition like colon, rectum or intestinal problems.

Most of us lead a busy schedule and a lifestyle that has lots of stress. Some of us may also have routines that do not really give us the luxury to be that conscious to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle. Also, with the fast paced life we live, we opt for quick and easy ways to dealing with things. However, if you don’t deal with constipation, you might have to deal with hemorrhoids and the subsequent hemorrhoid treatment, ranging from an over-the-counter  hemorrhoid cream to hemorrhoid laser surgery. A thrombosed external hemorrhoid can be especially problematic.

Included in these choices is our diet that mostly bought from hasty and inexpensive fast food prepared and served with less nutritious content and is considered to be more junk food than anything else. Lack of fiber and liquid in the diet is the leading cause of constipation. It is the most common disorder of the digestive tract, affecting to almost 2-20% of our population. While it can be cured by a number or constipation remedies, natural constipation remedies are still the best health plans among them.
