Headaches are common problems in people’s everyday lives, which has many looking for effective headache relief. We get them when we are at school, work, or any other activities that causes us this discomfort. Stress, anxiety and fatigue are also reason why we get headaches. But do we really understand this very usual condition we experience? Let us get a deeper understanding of headaches and the effective treatments we can find headache relief and get rid of them once and for all.
Cephalgia, known to many as the headache, is a condition where pain is felt in the head or any area near the neck. Pain is due to abnormalities on the pain-sensitive components of the brain. The brain itself cannot feel pain because it lacks pain receptors on its tissues. The pain can be caused by internal cranium which produces pain felt from blood vessels like arteries and veins, meninges, nerves; and external cranium which cause pain that takes place on the posterior of the skull, muscles, subcutaneous tissues, eyes, ears, sinuses and mucosa.
Meanwhile, a tension-type headache, commonly termed tension headache, is the most ordinary type of headache. The pain can start from the neck, eyes, or other muscle groups in the body like the back. Tension-type headaches are the reason for all types of headaches felt most commonly by people. The simple description of squeezed-like pain on these areas of the body characterizes tension headache.
On the other hand, the second most common type is the sinus headache which is difficult to differentiate from tension-headaches as they manifest the same symptoms as sinus headaches. This type is characterized by dull, deep, throbbing pain in the front of your head and face. They are caused by an inflammation and congestion of the sinuses. Sinuses are structures of the respiratory system, described as air-filled cavities around the nose, cheeks and eyes. Usual strenuous activities and low temperature causes sinus headache to come about.
Tension and sinus headache relief often depends on the type, the severity, and the frequency of occurrence. In usual tension and sinus headaches, it can be effectively treated using conventional measures, such as lifestyle modifications like changes in dietary intake and sleep patterns; and over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. It is also necessary to know the exact cause of the headache before treating it for optimum results.
But as headache occurs, it is not always best to resort to synthetic and aggressive measures right away. Aside from the need to see a doctor for clear check-up of the condition and exact diagnosis, medication may pose harsh side effects on the body especially if you self-medicate. Therefore, it is best that we succumb to natural headache relief if possible. A physiological relieving measure is massage on the affected area. It can be done by light, steady, rotating motions on the area of the head slowly radiating to other areas. Cold compress on the forehead, temples, or nape are also beneficial. Resting, sitting and relaxing in a low-lit room could also minimize headache. Taking a warm bath, walks, and physical therapy exercises are also often helpful.
